Meet Steve Whysall — Professional Photographer & Photojournalist with 25+ Years of Experience

With more than two decades working as a photojournalist, I’ve learned something simple but powerful:

The best photos don’t happen by accident — they’re anticipated.
A true professional doesn’t just react to a moment; they see it coming and position themselves to capture it perfectly.

Add in precise control of lighting — the difference between flat and cinematic — and that’s when a photo goes from ordinary to unforgettable.

If you’re looking for images that feel alive, not just well-framed snapshots, that’s what I deliver.

About

Photography has taken me on an extraordinary 25+ year journey—one that began at The Corcoran Gallery of Art, where I earned my degree in Art & Photography, and evolved into a career shaped by storytelling, precision, and real-world experience.

Early on, I had the rare opportunity to work alongside National Geographic photographer Richard Nowitz, assisting and photographing editorial assignments across the country for five years. That experience taught me how to create images that do more than look beautiful—they inform, endure, and tell meaningful stories. During this time, my aerial photography was published in a National Geographic feature on Washington, D.C., a milestone that continues to influence my approach behind the camera.

My work has taken me around the world. I have photographed travel destinations for Condé Nast and World Magazine, and as a photojournalist for Greenpeace, I documented toxic environments for national advertising campaigns—work that demanded honesty, sensitivity, and impact.

One of the most meaningful assignments of my career brought me to the Badlands of South Dakota, where I lived among the Lakota Sioux. While there, I created a photographic series documenting their culture, resilience, and the effects of the modern world on their way of life. That project cemented my belief that photography should preserve truth and emotion—not just appearances.

Executive & Editorial Portraits

Over the years, I have been trusted to photograph executives, world leaders, and public figures for advertising campaigns, annual reports, and official portraits. My work includes portraits of President George W. Bush, members of his cabinet including Donald Rumsfeld, and the Prime Minister of Poland. Whether in a studio or on location, I focus on creating portraits that feel authentic, confident, and timeless.

From Chef to Photographer

Before photography, I was a professional chef. A life-changing burn injury forced me to reconsider my path—but it also led me to pick up a camera in a more serious way. That background continues to shape my food photography today.

My understanding of food—how it’s prepared, plated, and meant to be experienced—allows me to style and photograph dishes in a way that feels honest and appetizing. My goal is simple: images that make you want to sit down and take a bite.

Wedding Photography

Wedding photography is where everything comes together—storytelling, timing, emotion, and experience.

My philosophy is simple:
When the day is over, all that remains are your memories and your photographs.
Experience matters.

With over 1,000 weddings photographed, I approach each celebration as a visual documentary, capturing real moments as they unfold—the quiet exchanges, the laughter, the energy of the people you love most. Using a photojournalistic approach, I create a rich, cohesive story of your day that feels genuine, emotional, and timeless.

Your wedding photos should do more than show how it looked. They should remind you how it felt.

Photography Awards

Finally, during my career, I have received several honors, including The H.E. Klappert Memorial Award for Photography.

Steve Whysall is the winner of The Gold and The Silver Award in international competitions sponsored by the Artistic Guild of the Wedding Photojournalist Associations. (AG)WPJA is comprised of outstanding wedding photographers.
