Real Photography Reviews by Real Clients

Steve is an incredibly talented photographer- and he brings a level of professionalism to his work that is truly commendable. My fiance and I were so impressed that he wanted to take the time to get to know us before shooting our wedding, and that extra care really shows in his work. I love what he does with lighting! As someone who also works events like weddings, I appreciated being able to talk with him about production concerns and his forethought in making everything as perfect as possible. Thanks, Steve!

Steve worked with us to help us achieve our goal of getting some outdoor family photos. He was punctual, found us a great location by a nearby river, put us at ease, and took some awesome photos despite wind and a bit of rain. He was easy to communicate with, and delivered as promised. He even got into the water (in November!) to help us get a few shots of our son on the rocks in the river. He was also kind, considerate, and even thought to let our son be the lighting assistant for a few photos, which went a long way toward holding a teenager’s interest. We are very appreciative of Steve’s professional handling of our photo session and would highly recommend him to anyone seeking a professional photographer.

I was searching for a local photographer to do food photos for our website, and talked to several before deciding to work with Steve— whom I chose because he was the most pleasant, had the most experience, and was a former chef! I definitely made the right decision. I’ve worked with him on three separate occasions now, and have had nothing but wonderful experiences. He is professional, accommodating, and super fun to work with— as is his assistant. He was able to translate our vision (which was admittedly vague at times) into gorgeous photos that we are very excited to showcase on our new website. Cannot say enough good things, and would definitely recommend his services. Thank you, Steve!

Steve is an absolute genius & an exceptional artist who creates the greatest works of art through the eyes of a lens. His photography is unique, one of a kind and exquisite. We were so lucky that he captured our wedding. What an emotionally dedicated professional. This guy cares & the more you go with his creative edge the better off you’ll be. It’s ok to get your wedding dress a little ruffled ladies if you want Steve’s quality shots. Thank you Steve! You have made it possible for us to always remember the most incredible evening.

When I Googled “gourmet food photographer in Frederick MD”, Whysall Photography was the first to pop up. I read through Steve’s website and thought this guy sounds too good to be true. But I took my chances and gave him a call to see if he would take photographs of my cheesecakes for my small start up business. We spoke a few minutes on the phone. He was kind and accommodating and instantly I felt confident he was the guy for the job. We met that same week to discuss my vision. After just a few minutes of consulting with Steve, and seeing samples of his work, I knew that he was more than qualified to meet my needs. His credentials are impressive, but he exceeds them on a personal level. Steve is not only an artist, a visionary, a professional and a perfectionist when it comes to his craft, he is a genuinely nice and caring human being. He will not rest until he gets it just right. He created images that exceeded my vision. Without hesitation, I recommend Steve for any and all of your photography needs.

I can’t quite remember how I happened upon this photographer, but I am so very glad that I did! We hired him to take photos of our staff and facilities for our Doctor’s office and he definitely exceeded our expectations.
The work that he does with lighting alone is simply incredible. He gave us amazing corporate head shots, group shots, and action shots to name a few.
His patience and professionalism during a day long shoot with almost 20 women was extremely admirable. Take a look through his amazing portfolio and see his work for yourself. I would definitely recommend him for anyone’s big occasion.
— Alexis
“Simply put, we lucked out with Steve. Our wedding photos were more artistic, beautiful, and unique than we could have possibly hoped for. We have heard from so many family members, friends, and coworkers tell us that our photos are the best photos they have ever seen. At the risk of sounding narcissistic, we have to agree. So like I said, we really lucked out. Look no further. Steve is a true talent and is the best at what he does.”
— Chau
My fiance and I recently hired Steve to do our wedding and engagement photography and are very happy with our decision. We just got our engagement pictures back recently with only about one week turnover time (during the thanksgiving holiday). All of our pictures turned out amazing. He is an expert at his craft and his prices are of great value. You won’t get better for your money.
His assistant Rachel was wonderful as well and they made for a great team together.
— Kaitlin
Spectacular personal service. Extremely creative, and an absolute pleasure to work with. Far exceeded any expectation I had. Steve is a pro and won’t stop until he gets the shot(s) that satisfy your taste.

5starI needed headshots for work that are not too stiff and show my personality. I also wanted some for family. Steve was a joy to work with and HE MADE ME LOOK 10 YEARS YOUNGER. Of course, I’m shouting! I’m 52 and his lighting was beautiful. No airbrushing, just lighting. If you look close, you can tell I’m starting to get wrinkles, but the lighting really diminishes them. And Steve had me cracking up so he got some laughing shots my family members love. The one you see here <<< that tiny head shot, that is the one I chose for work. I think you can click my link and see a few more. You can also see how this one looks in full length. They were not all identical and it was a very hard choice. When you go to Steve’s full web site, take a look at the commercial, travel, weddings and architecture shots. Wow. Walking around in the studio feels like being inside of a National Geographic magazine.
— Beth
“Steve is an all around class act. Very professional...and he takes WONDERFUL pictures!”

If you are looking for a true photographic artist contact Steve Whysall. He will help guide you from concept to finished work with results that will amaze you. I have worked with numerous photographers and artists throughout the years and have never encountered anyone with a stronger work ethic, artistic creativity and attention to detail.

We hired Whysall Photography, LLC numerous times to photograph our completed remodel projects. They have proven to be professional, experienced, timely, FUN & affordable. They are able to provide quality photos for not only large remodeled spaces, but also very small spaces. Their experience, equipment and lighting have produced beautiful photos for our website and advertising material! We will be hiring them again in October for another photo shoot. Thank you Whysall Photography, LLC!

Steve is such an excellent photographer!! He was willing to travel all the way up to NJ with his assistant to shoot my wedding. That speaks volumes right there! He and Rachel bent over backwards for us to make sure everything was perfect. I can imagine it has to be tough trying to make sure you catch everything you think the bride and groom would want, and they did exactly that. The pictures came out amazing!! I would recommend Steve to any and all brides looking for a photographer that really knows his profession and is so easy to work with! Thank you so much Steve and Rachel!!
— Jana
Steve is an excellent photographer and an even better person. He made me and my fiance so comfortable during both a proposal and an engagement session, and did whatever possible to make sure we got the best product. Easy to work with and definitely a perfectionist. Look forward to having him at our wedding as well.
— Wes
“I Honestly cannot say enough good things! When we first saw Steve’s work online, we knew right away that we wanted him to capture our wedding. Then, when we met him, we were even more sure. Not only is his photography breathtaking, but more importantly his personality is so inviting and “easy” that we knew he would be a perfect fit for our big day. In the months leading up to our wedding he was great about keeping in touch with us and making sure he knew exactly what vision we had for our day. He was also very accommodating with regards to timing and weather considerations. On the day of, he was there early (even though we were late) and was ready to work! Steve was great at recommending our posed shots, but he was also great at capturing those special “candid” moments- the ones where you think no one is looking. He captured every moment and emotion of our day. Steve was a pleasure to work with. We laughed, we joked, and it really shows through our pictures. I can’t thank Steve enough. My husband and I didn’t have a traditional wedding. We eloped and had an “announcement” session (instead of a traditional “engagement” session); however, with Steve’s help, we won’t ever feel like we were missing out. We have wonderful memories and even better photos of our wedding to look back on. When planning your wedding, you should make sure that your photographer is the BEST because those photos are the one thing you can look back to years later. Steve is absolutely the best! “
— Forever grateful, Wesley and Christina
“My husband (who’s favorite hobby is photography) saw one of Steve’s books at a vineyard we looked at for our wedding but ended up not booking. Johann was insistent on trying to get Steve for our wedding, and I’m so glad he was! Steve was so laid back and in control the entire day, which made our wedding so much more enjoyable. He took some really beautiful and creative photos for us - everyone has complimented on the one they’ve seen. His style is also to take the bride and groom away for 10-15 minutes throughout the course of the reception to get creative shots with varying lighting, instead of taking a ton of pictures right after the ceremony. We loved this as it gave us the perfect balance of time with our friends and family, as well as some time to ourselves. Since he insists on meeting the couple before the day of the wedding, we were aware of his style and were happy to give him free reign to allow maximum creativity. It was perfect! We cannot recommend Steve strongly enough.
— Amy and Johann
“Booking Steve as our photographer was the BEST choice we made in our whole wedding planning process! I saw his work when I was walking by his shop and was taken aback by a bridal portrait of his. I immediately went inside and was astonished with all of his work. Steve has the amazing ability to capture the perfect amount of background, lighting, and detail to make your photos one of a kind. Steve’s work is impeccable and he is a blast to work with! When all else is gone, your wedding pictures are the only thing you have left of your big day. You will not be disappointed if you book with Whysall Photography!”
— Chris
“We absolutely loved working with Steve Whysall for both our engagement photo shoot and our wedding. Steve is open, honest and encourages couples to meet with him beforehand to see if it’s a good fit. Having a good relationship with your photographer is vital to getting the memories you want captured. Steve prefers to do more artistic photographs rather than your standard wedding posed pictures. If you want standard group shots makes sure to provide a list and remember what pictures you want- in the craziness of the day we forgot to get pictures with our entire immediate families- we have pictures with our parents, just not with them and our siblings. However, the couple portraits we have are amazing- be open to climbing onto trucks or walking through the woods barefoot! Have an open mind and let Steve’s artistry take over you won’t be disappointed. In terms of pricing he is comparable to other photographers, we really like that we have joint copyright and own all of our engagement and wedding photos. Def. take advantage of the engagement photo shoot- it gets you comfortable with Steve’s style and if you’ve never taken professional pictures before, it familiarizes you with how to take photos before the big day. We loved working with Steve and absolutely recommend working with him for your wedding or special occasion.”
— Dannie
“Steve is AWESOME! He is edgy, creative, and far from your traditional photographer! He has an amazing eye and great vision! Great traditional pictures and breathtaking edgy pictures with flair, but still family appropriate. Such a true pleasure to work with! We would recommend him to all our friends and family! Best photographer EVER!!!!!-
— Suzy
“The most under-rated and perhaps brilliant photographer within the D.C. Metropolitan area. I simply cannot recommend a better or more talented individual for any of your photography needs. Whysall Photography is hands down, the best kept secret in Northern Virginia. Your pictures will turn out remarkable, trust me! ((:-

“Steve was one of my favourite vendors from the beginning, because his response to emails was amazingly fast, which made planning from a distance easier. Steve always tried to make time for us when we were in the area. He tried to get all of the posed shots (which he knew we weren’t that bothered with) done and out of the way as quickly as possible. I normally don’t like having pictures taken because I never look good in them, but he somehow made me look pretty in them. His assistant, Patrick, was given the difficult job of photographing my husband who generally forbids people from taking his picture. Patrick was aware and understanding of this fact and somehow picked some really cool shots which made the situation fun for my husband and his party. Both Steve and Patrick were unobtrusive when taking all the candid shots, and it was great to see the results of having two perspectives throughout the wedding. They got some really cool shots of us dancing (which Steve knew was important to us based on one conversation I had with him almost a year prior), playing badmiton, and the guys drinking and smoking. Steve always seemed in control of what was going on with a shot, but his laid back attitude kept things easy and light. He was great to work with and I hope he had as much fun shooting our wedding as we had having him photograph it. We were very pleased with our experience with him and the end product, in fact my sister will be having him photograph her wedding in a few months.”

“Steve and his assistant did a sensational job with our wedding photos. He took extra time to get to know us before the wedding, which made us feel more comfortable on the wedding day. He was prompt- already there when we arrived at the venue and with us the entire time. And the photos were brilliant: artful, creative, fun - he crafted amazing feats of magic with lights and editing and caught so many wonderful candid moments when we were getting ready, touching moments from the ceremony, and tons of goofy laugh-out-loud shots from late-night dancing and throughout the night. Oh, and he somehow talked a couple outside the venue into letting me ride their horse in my wedding dress! These are abviously photos shot by a photojournalist with an adventurous spirit and an artistic eye, NOT a by-the-book wedding photographer. I am so glad we used Steve Whysall. Will recommend him again and again.
— Jenn
“Steve was an outstanding partner in our wedding experience. After an exhaustive search, we selected Whysall based on their creativity and commitment to their craft. As per Steve’s request, we met in advance in an effort to gain personal insight into each other personality, character, and preferences. This decision paid huge dividends on our wedding day as Steve was comfortable directing us for the perfect location and shot. Additionally, in was clear to me immediately that Steve’s profession is not simply a job but a passion. He takes pride in his work and defines himself buy the quality of both his deliverables and customer satisfaction. If you appreciate creativity, flexibility, and unique outcomes, choose Whysall.”
— Mike and Jen
“We really enjoyed working with Steve on our engagement and wedding photos. We selected him after thorough research of the photographers in the area. He was by far the best value, not to mention his work is astonishing. We loved his creativity and spontaneity, and also his use of light. Our pictures were awesome with memories we will cherish for years to come. We highly recommend Steve for your wedding or next event. We look forward to working with him again in the future!”
— Ana
“Steve is professional, courteous, and a true artist. He found interesting ways to document our military wedding, and was generous with his time and talent. When we had a family member “attend” via Skype from Korea, he took pictures of the IPAD with the family member’s face on it. Steve was accommodating of my requests for several large group photos, and extremely creative in finding ways to capitalize on the decor of a military chapel. I was happy to leave the photography up to him, with some initial guidance as to what we were looking for. He was patient, professional, and seemed to genuinely enjoy his work. He is a true pleasure to work with.”
— Pam
“I hired Steve to shoot my wedding in Baltimore. I knew he would do a great job based on the portfolio he showed me when we first met up. I am an artist also and am critical when viewing other artists’ work. Steve has a great eye for unique compositions and does a thorough job making sure that he gets the shot he wants every time. I especially love how well he created balance in all my shots without using symmetry. The pictures are flawless. I would recommend Steve to anybody (bride or not) who appreciates an above-average and artistic final product.”
— Andrea
“Aside from marrying my husband, Steve Whysall was probably the best part of our wedding. As a photographer with National Geographic credits, Steve’s work was obviously outstanding and very much in the style we were looking for. He captured the romance of the day, but what he excels at is telling a story and capturing people, which is exactly what we wanted from our wedding photos. Even better than his work, though, is Steve’s personality. He met with both of us prior to our wedding to ensure everyone was comfortable, so there would be no awkwardness between photographer and subject on the big day. This simple meeting made a big difference when the stress was high at the husband and I were able to relate to Steve, trusting him and laughing with him despite the stress, which resulted in him capturing who we really are as opposed to just getting pretty pictures of a bride and groom. He listened to our wants and needs, he let us know of any concerns he had, he prioritized his demands, and he delivered...and it seemed like he was having a good time, which kept us at ease. We had so much fun at our wedding and with Steve, and we have phenomenal pictures to prove it!”
— Ano
“Steve specializes in photo-journalistic style images, and takes gorgeous photographs. That being said, he is also completely capable of taking fantastic posed photographs. He is completely professional, has very creative ideas, and is extremely reliable. Highly recommended.”
“Steve is an amazing photographer. Our wedding pictures came out so beautiful and elegant. He captures shots that are so unique and really tells a story with them. He was very prompt and on time the day of our wedding and began shooting right away. He also brought Heather his assistant with him so that we could get shots from the 2 different rooms that my fiancee and myself were getting ready in, she was amazing as well, she did such a nice job with the guys while they were getting ready. It was nice to have 2 photographers all night capturing different parts of each event. Steve was flexible with his hours as well and stayed a little over the contracted time to ensure that he got all of the shots we wanted. It was very important to us to have a photographer that understood us and what we wanted so that they would capture the day the way we wanted to remember it and that is exactly what Steve did. Thank you!”
— Amy
“Steve is absolutely fantastic. He will give you art. I honestly want to hang his pictures everywhere. I was completely surprised at how quickly he took pictures after the wedding. This guy knows what he is doing. His assistant Patrick is great as well. I wanted someone who wouldn’t just take still shots of everyone, and more candid, and he gave me exactly what I wanted. The moments he caught are magical.”
— Cathlene
“Excellent quality and value - bottom line is that we got amazing photos and didn’t have to break the bank for it. Amazing photos came out of our experience with Steve and we’re lucky to have such beautiful keepsakes.”
— Yu
“Steve and his photography partner, Patrick, were a great team. We had a small-ish wedding (approx 50 guests), so Steve had a less expensive option for us, which was incredibly helpful. We met Steve twice before the wedding to develop rapport (something he recommended) before the big day. It really did help. He provided the digital images with edits in about one week. Guests were very impressed with his work. He uses interesting angles—truly an artist—and showed us in our best light. “

“Steve Whysall to the rescue! With our ceremony only three days away; we got word that our out of town photographer would not be able to make the ceremony. We were faced with two choices at that point. *First being that we just go on with the ceremony and realize that we would not have pictures of our special day. *Second choice, and admittedly a long shot; was to see if a local photographer just might be available and willing to take on a last minute job (yes, I know you are thinking “that’s nut’s; plans like these are made up to a year in advance!”). So, off to the Internet I went. I viewed the local photographers, and found myself returning to Whysall Photography, LLC several times. Steve’s credentials impressed me, and he stood out from the crowd. I thought to myself; “If your going out on a limb to attempt to hire a photographer in the eleventh hour; go big! This guy was at the top of his class at the Corcoran, and worked with National Geographic! I made the choice to send Steve an E-mail explaining my situation, and inquired if he was available for a last minute shoot. After sending the E-mail, I began looking at the other area photographer’s for a second choice; thinking I might get a response the next day from Steve, saying he was busy that Saturday. I don’t think that more than 30 minutes had passed when I got a response from Steve! He had a family commitment that Saturday, but would be agreeable to helping us out. What a stroke of luck! We then spoke on the phone to iron out the details. The next day, I got a call from Steve; he wanted to meet us and see the church to get an idea what he would need for lighting. Steve came to our home (so very impressive) and spent some time going over what types of shots we were interested in getting, as well as getting a feel for our personalities. We then we went to the church so he could see what lighting he needed for the church. The next day, Steve and his assistant arrived at our home where we did some outside shots before the sun went down (our’s was a 6:00 p.m. ceremony) taking advantage of the natural light. We were then off to the ceremony, then returned to our home for the reception. Steve and his assistant were so great, very unobtrusive and easy going. A delight to work with. We can’t say enough about how impressed we were that Steve took the time to meet us prior to the ceremony! We have great candid shots of our guests and love the creative shots of us outside. Steve is a pro through and through. You see it as he is working, and you see it in his photo’s! Without reservation; we highly recommend Whysall Photography, LLC, and are thrilled he was there to shoot our event! “
— Gina
“Steve is an amazing photographer and we were thrilled with how the pictures turned out. It was a great pleasure working with Steve and I plan to use him again for other events in our life!”

Steve is amazing he took the best photos of my wedding. He made my husband and I feel comfortable taking photos with him. He is very funny and nice. He makes you feel like you have known him forever and a good friend
— Sarah
Steve is passionate about photography and does a superb job at capturing moments on film. His pictures convey energy and life without a stiff, posed feel. He arrived early at our wedding and got everyone on the ball. He was enthusiastic and efficient, making the photos fun with a sense of excitement and urgency so the ceremony could start on time. Besides taking photos of the ceremony, family, guests, and wedding details, Steve expertly captured the happiness and joy of the bride and groom with unique poses and good lighting. As a result of his work, we have some wonderful pictures to frame on the wall, put in albums, and treasure for years.
— Melanie
Steve did a fantastic job for our wedding back in March. We met prior to our wedding, which allowed Steve to figure out how he & us wanted our wedding shot. His team the day of was very professional and arrived well in advance. They went above and beyond to get the photos we wanted. Steve made our wedding move smoothly, taking pictures here and there not bogging us down. With this method we were able to enjoy more of our wedding. We look forward to using Steve again in the future.
— E+B
Steve was on our venue’s preferred list. After reviewing his website, he was the first photographer, with whom I made an appointment. After our meeting & impressed with his pictures, I hired him without coordinating with my fiancé or reviewing any other photographers. We’re so glad we did.

Steve has a terrific and calming personality for photographing large (or small) events where either emotions run high or conditions are not ideal. He is a problem solver, has a passion for every shot and possesses a fabulous photographic eye.

Our wedding took place at a farm/vineyard. The ceremony & cocktail hour were scheduled for outdoors and the reception was inside. However, mother nature decided to rain the morning of and weather reports differed as to when it would stop. Because of weather uncertainty, Steve arrived much earlier than scheduled, in order to set up his equipment in the barn if needed, and more importantly, to see how I, the bride, was handling a potential schedule change. With the soggy ground, and dark clouds above, he looked at me with assurance and said “we’re going to make this work.”

Steve knew we wanted to include our motorcycles in our photos but given the weather, it was uncertain whether outside would be possible. Using his skilled artistic, photographic eye, he found a spot in a equipment barn. It was a great area and the photos were fabulous!

While I could go on and on about how he recorded superb memories of our wedding, I will only say wonderful things about Steve and his photography. He is a consummate professional who puts heart and soul into every photo and is an extraordinary photographer that we would HIGHLY RECOMMEND anytime, anywhere.
